Macro Monday: Paved with gold

When I returned home from my quilting adventure, the short grass prairie was awash in the yellow of Englemann's Bladderpod, Lesquerella engelmannii. After two drought-stricken years it was nice to see the wildflowers making a recovery. Intending to take a macro, I captured the sunrise first.

Each year one species outshines the others in sheer quantity. This seems to be the Year of the Bladderpod (so far). There are still about seventy species yet to come! Better hurry up and order my bees!

Even the mowed paths around the wildflower meadow and through the Juniper and Oak savanna seem to be paved with gold where this flower has taken up residence. That's part of the magic of this place.

i heard the other day that it takes something like 7 acres of wildflowers to support one hive of bees. What do you say, true or not true? that seems like a lot of flowers to bee ratio to me, but I have no idea.

Bees are known to forage up to five miles from their hive, so this might be true. But in all reality, they might not need all the flowers in one contiguous seven acres--I've seen stories about people who keep a hive on their condo roof top in the downtown of a big city, and they do just fine. We have five acres of wildflowers, so hopefully our bees won't have to go far!

I could live in that sky. Heavens above and seas of yellow below. Here in the NW it's green green green.
