Critter-Proofing the Coop Part Two

Once the panel was attached, chicken wire was added as the second layer of critter-proofing the underside of the coop. It was stapled to the back side of the joists, tied with brick ties to the front of the panel, and bent into an "L" below the ground and covered back over with the soil.

Finally, the flooring goes down! This is 3/4" plywood.

Here Farmer Rick is demonstrating "Measure Once, Cut Twice". He says he's working his way up to Carpenter Rick. There is less digging in carpentry.

If you ever keep chickens you will soon be looking for ways to make chores easier and your coop cleaner. We recommend using vinyl flooring. We hope to get to that tomorrow.

vinyl floor in the chicken coop huh? Do you get picky with the color on that? lol!

I'm a bit of a pessimist. I think the critters will still get in.

do you worry about termites in this kind of building?

gee, could I sound any more negative in that last comment? Sorry. Most of it is sarcasm. which is not a very nice way to comment. I ought to learn to keep my mouth shut more often.

The rest of the coop will employ hardware cloth, which, when properly applied, is the safest netting available (unlike actual chicken wire). Critters will have to be very industrious diggers and chewers to get to and through the floor.

Although we do have termites in a very ancient outbuilding we are ready to tear down, it's so dry here that termites aren't a huge local issue.

The chickens get the cheapest generic flooring available, it's white with flecks of brown, so it looks like the chickens have already been there. On top of the vinyl flooring there will be a 3" layer of pine shavings which we sweep out and compost every two weeks.
